He loves the sound of your heart more than the sound of your voice

Standing during worship recently at an event, the person next to me was not the greatest singer but was one of the most passionate worshippers I have heard.

Nope, she wasn’t jumping all around the place, but with her voice she was unrestrained, unbridled, unashamedly giving her all to Jesus. She was singing to Him as if He was standing right in front of her and they were the only ones in the room.

It was a profound moment for me. I felt somehow that I was intruding, but I couldn’t help catch the ‘run off’ from her praise party. I felt the warm sunshine, the delight, the love that was being exchanged between Father and daughter. In that moment I saw how He was responding to her heart, not the audible sound she was making.

It was the sound of her heart He was drawn to. His deep love and devotion for her was a physical present that I was getting the benefit from. With tears streaming down my face, I was once again reminded what worship really is and really isn’t. I could hear Him in my heart saying ‘watch closely, this is what matters to me.’  He cares profoundly about the condition of our hearts.

Note to self and other fellow worship team members... As much as we pay attention to the chords we play, the clever arrangements we construct, let us also remember to pay close attention to the state of our hearts. He loves the sound of our hearts more than the sound of our voice.

Just saying…

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
